What is Piriformis Syndrome

Piriformis Syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle (deep in the butt) is tight and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve that leads down your leg. People describe the sensation as a real “pain in the butt” and also complain of having numbness and tingling sensations going down the back of the leg. This is very common during pregnancy, but can also happen to anyone. We do see this commonly when we are doing chiropractic treatments during pregnancy. You are most likely to have a tight piriformis on one side of your body, but if it’s on both sides, that’s an even more severe situation. In either case, when nerves are irritated, it’s a sign of major dysfunction in your body and needs to be addressed as soon as possible so that it doesn’t become permanent, or get worse.

  • Pain in the butt
  • Swelling, spasm, or scar tissue in the butt
  • Nerve sensations down one leg

Piriformis Syndrome and Sciatic Pain?

The reason Piriformis Syndrome is likely to cause sciatica is because the sciatic nerve travels right through where your piriformis muscle is. In some cases the nerve passes over the muscle, in other cases the nerve passes under the muscle, and in some rare cases, the nerve passes directly through the middle of the muscle. In any case, when your lifestyle leads to the muscle becoming tight (going into spasm), it irritates the nerve, causing sciatic pain. Some of our patients who come are looking for chiropractic treatment for sciatica actually are affected by Piriformis Syndrome.
